You do not need an enterprise budget to be reasonably secure. Most successful attacks on small businesses exploit a handful of avoidable gaps. Start here.
1. Multi-factor authentication everywhere
Turn on MFA for email, cloud platforms, accounting and remote access. It blocks the majority of account-takeover attempts.
2. Tested backups
Keep at least one copy offline or immutable, and regularly test restoring it. An untested backup is a hope, not a plan.
3. Patch promptly
Enable automatic updates for operating systems, browsers and business applications.
4. Least-privilege access
Give people only the access they need, and remove it when they leave.
5. Secure configuration
Change default passwords, disable unused services and review cloud storage permissions.
6. Staff awareness
Short, regular training on phishing is one of the highest-value investments you can make.
7. A simple incident plan
Know who to call, what to isolate and how to communicate if something goes wrong. The UK government-backed Cyber Essentials scheme is a sensible framework to work towards.
